Livepeer Orchestrators are both general purpose GPU compute providers, as well as economic actors that stake LPT, earn rewards, and vote in governance. They also host and provide AI models & inference endpoints (including BYOC) which power novel services like AI avatars and agent workloads. Additionally, they may also manage delegated LPT and can have significant input into the direction of the network by voting as a block in governance with their delegators.

General Compute Functions

Orchestrators perform two core compute functions on the Livepeer network: transcoding and AI inference. They do this by running a node that is connected to the network and performing the work that is assigned to it.

Transcoding

Transcoding is the process of converting video from one format to another. Orchestrators on the Livepeer network perform transcoding by running a node that is connected to the network and performing the work that is assigned to it.

AI Inference

AI inference is the process of running a model to make a prediction. Orchestrators on the Livepeer network perform AI inference by running a node that is connected to the network and performing the work that is assigned to it.

Custom Workloads

Orchestrators can also run custom workloads on the Livepeer network.

Delegation & Governance Services

Orchestrators can also earn rewards by delegating their LPT tokens to other orchestrators.

Example Services Powered by Orchestrators

Livepeer’s pivot to real-time AI video means orchestrators find themselves running AI agents, virtual avatar streams, and interactive experiences in addition to basic transcoding.
